2011 saw the anniversary of the beginning of one of the most destructive times and also most necessary times of the history of our country. The civil war, which began in 1861 and continued until 1865, represents a culture torn apart by its own people. With 11 southern states revolting against the Union’s decision to elect Abraham Lincoln as president and their opinion of slavery, they took on the remaining 25 states who were against slavery.
A bloody war, over 1 million casualties and over 600,000 deaths. Battles famous in the war include the Battle of For Sumter in South Carolina, First Battle of Bull Run, Northern Virginia Campaign, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg and perhaps the most famous battle of all, the Battle of Gettysburg, are today just a memory of what this nations people had to do to get equal rights for all its citizens.
Understanding the importance of this period in our nations history, many of the areas throughout much of the east and south eastern United States, represent this part of history in memorial.
