Step one to packing right is to know your destination. For example, most areas have seasons during which you can expect certain types of weather. From the Caribbean to Alaska, the month you travel will help you determine what you need to pack. Get to know an areas rainy season, cold season, dry season and pack accordingly.
Warm Weather Packing Tips
- Sunscreen is important during the warm months as you can expect to be in it a lot. Remember that even if it is overcast, the sun can still harm you, especially when you are on the water.
- Do not forget bug repellent. Many illnesses can be transmitted by insect bites, and even if this does not happen, bug bites can be very irritating. Warm weather, especially moist, will cause the insects to come out.
- Sunglasses and hats are very important for protecting your eyes. Be sure to protect your eyes.
- Wear light cotton or air wicking clothing when you travel in hot areas to help promote cooling.
- Pack a sweat shirt or light jacket for the cool evening just in case.
Cold Weather Packing Tips
- Layers are important in the cold weather. Getting to hot can cause you to sweat and make you even colder making it important that you can adjust what you wear to avoid getting damp.
- Remember your feet and hands in cold areas. These areas are the first to get cold, making it of the utmost importance to wear warm socks and gloves and making sure your shoes or boats are water proof to keep your feet dry.
Rainy Weather Packing Tips
- Take a rain poncho or a water proof coat with you. Not only is it small and easy to pack, but it will make you much happier than having to punch a hole in a plastic bag when the rain shows up.
- Wear clothes that dry quickly.
- Wear shoes that are waterproof. If they are not already waterproof, before you go, use some waterproofing spray.
- Pack plastic bags to put your clothes in when they are wet so they don’t get your other clothes wet.
- Avoid mildew by hanging damp clothes up when you get to a place where this is possible.
- Layer your clothes so that you can adjust for temperature changes.
