Tradewinds Vacations Heading Into The Wild Blue Yonder

Posted on 11.06.12

A well known city for world class attractions, Washington DC is home to many Smithsonian museums including the famous National Air and Space Museum. This month as we celebrate aviation history, we invite you to take a closer look at this top attraction in our Nation’s capital. Explore history and travel with reviews from Tradewinds Vacations.

The museum located in the National Mall in addition to the additional display facility located not far way in Chantilly Virginia provide a closer look at this history of flight including the original Wright Flyer from 1903 as well as the Spirit of St. Louis, moon rocks and even the Space Shuttle Discovery now on display as well.

Maintaining the largest collection of historical air and spacecraft in the world, the museum also continues to do vital research and studies of planetary science and terrestrial geology. Though home to many permanent museums, like other museums, the National Air and Space Museum also offers temporary exhibits as well. Currently, featured exhibitions going on include:

Fly Marines! The Centennial of Marine Corps Aviation 1912-2012
Fifty years of Human Space Flight
Barron Hilton Pioneers of Flight
AirCraft: The Jet as Art
The Wright Brothers & The Invention of the Aerial Age

Upcoming Featured Exhibits:

Time and Navigation The Untold story of getting from here to there – Opening in March of 2013, this exhibit tells the story of time and space and how we find our way. Taking place in the Washington DC location, it offers information about the connection between time and space including how sailors used clocks to navigate the oceans of the world over 250 years ago.

Visiting

Within the museums two locations, a visit will require at least a couple hours to truly explore the sights.
Both sites are open throughout the year and closed only on Christmas. Admission is free, however, if you drive, parking will most likely cost you.
